Big Box Workshop

Big Box and Sprinklered Controlled Fires

The "Big Box" store has gotten bigger. There was a time, not too long ago, when we considered a 150,000 sq ft Wal-Mart Supercenter to be a big commercial building. Today, that size occupancy pales in comparison to the mammoth fulfillment centers that exist all over the country. Sizes range from the paltry 600,000 sq ft to well over a 1,000,000 sq ft and they just keep getting bigger.

Consider the following:

  • Big Box Stores and Distribution Centers are not residential buildings and require a different approach
  • Life Safety Profile of these buildings look different
  • Most all these buildings have fire protection systems designed to contain the fire
  • Fire Department personnel should have a working understanding of fire protection systems

Join us for a two-day Big Box Workshop where we take an in depth look at the proliferation of these new buildings and examine their impact on the fire service. There will be lively discussions from those with experience along with an opportunity to put the ideas into actions during a stirring round of big box simulations.

  • Review of Division Supervisor Job description
  • Review of Big Box Critical Factors
  • Pull up and hook up (NFPA 13 E)
  • In depth look at Fire Protection systems
  • Understanding of why we slow down on Big Box fires
  • Application of the Strategic Decision-Making Model at Big Box fires
  • We will run multiple Big Box sims and exercise using S/D Bosses
  • Active Blue Card ICs and instructors will receive 16 hours of continuing education
